On July 16, 2019 , The Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center attended Business Economics Conference 2019. It is an annual event held by Prasetiya Mulya University in collaboration with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).  It aimed to discuss the current relevant issues that can be integrated inclusively in the development of Indonesia. The theme of this event was “Harnessing Indonesia’s Demographic Dividend: Envisioning the Jobs of the Future.” Demographic dividend is an accelerated economic growth that may result from a decline in a country’s birth and death rates and the subsequent change in the age structure of the population.

The event started with a welcoming remark by the Executive Director of CSIS, Philips J. Vermonte, and a keynote speech by the Rector of  Prasetiya Mulya University,  Prof. Dr. Djisman Simandjuntak. There was discussion that was divided into two panel sessions, “Attaining the Demographic Dividend” and “Getting Ready for the Future Jobs.” There were also poster presentations by Prasetiya Mulya Business Economics students about their analysis and opinion regarding the topics.

It can be concluded that the demographic dividend, which is predicted to peak in 2030, is a big challenge for Indonesia. By the rate of human development index, the number of educated and highly skilled workers, the unemployment rate, and the productivity rate of workers, Indonesia is still lagging behind other emerging countries.  However, the government should be optimist about this opportunity. The government needs to continuously improve the quality of education, health, and technology literacy. Therefore, Indonesia can make the most out  of this demographic dividend by welcoming 2030 with improvements in human resources quality.
